(September 30, 2016) I’ve reached that time in my life when I’m implicitly talking about myself whenever I implore a youngster to respect his or her elders. So I checked out the video for Ted Winn’s new song “Grateful” on YouTube and my heart was made happy by what I saw. “Grateful” is a traditional gospel ballad in every sense of the word. A beautiful written and rendered song of gratitude for all of that God has done for humanity and for Winn in particular.

Those who are pining for that old time religion in their religious music will find comfort in Winn’s soaring vocals backed by an equally strong choir. However, the track adds an equally pleasant surprise by sliding into an homage to the late great Walter Hawkins and his 1978 classic “Be Grateful,” performed by Hawkins’ sister Lynette Hawkins Stephens. “Be Grateful” is one of my favorite gospel songs and it wonderful that Winn used his song and video to introduce a new generation of listeners of a cut from an underrated era of gospel music.
