(December 23, 2018) Google tells me that Toronto is 230 miles from Detroit. The Toronto based band U.N. Jefferson bridges that distance musically on their self-titled EP. U.N. Jefferson is a joyous bit of retro northern soul that features gospel infused piano riffs, blaring horns, touches of rock and call and response lyrics and it’s all brought together by frontman and songwriter Ajay Massey.

The track featured in this First Listen is “Testify,” a mash up of power packed R&B and gospel that encapsulates the U.N. Jefferson sound. You can check out Massey in this video where he fuses his strong voice with some James Brown inspired footwork. This is a great song that leads off a really fun and funky EP.
