(April 5, 2023) Before honing his craft as a soul balladeer in the late eighties and early nineties, Will Downing released a number of equally soulful, club-ready tracks that made waves on dance floors throughout the US and Europe. Pre-solo outings such as N.V.’s “Let Me Do You” and early singles of his own like “A Love Supreme” and “Come Together as One” preceded his ascension as a defining artist of the Quiet Storm sector.
More than three decades on from those seminal works, Downing’s latest single, “Love on You,” has been given a smoothly kinetic house flavor on a new remix. His vocals from the original version are placed aptly into the coolly swaying rhythmic progression for a listening experience that is just as seductive—with an added spin factor. The straightforward but tasteful lyrical passages mesh with the new vibe nicely, with Downing’s spoken interlude fitting like a glove. There’s not any new musical ground broken; but this extension of his signature sound is an ideal reintroduction of the versatile appeal of his vocals. And it’s a subtle reminder to longtime fans of something we’ve been missing for quite some time.
