The legendary William Bell wants to "Make Loving Great Again" on new single

(February 17, 2023) It takes a great singer and songwriter to have the ability to wave references to Donald Trump and Barack Obama into the same tune and it works. William Bell is that great singer and songwriter. And before we go any further, Bell remains in good voice even at the age of 83. His new song “Let’s Make Love Great Again,” is an obvious play on the political slogan from number 45’s 2016 campaign.

The cut is an appeal for humanity to take a step back, slow down and make love, in all its manifestations, the center of what we seek to do. Of course, making love a priority in our personal and public interactions is going to take work and Bell implores us to work on putting aside petty difference, trying to be grateful, content and truly empathic and tolerant. All these virtues have been in short supply in our country and world and leaders such as the 45th president played a big role in making the world a less loving, more hostile place.

“Let’s Make Love Great Again,” has the sound of a classic love ballad. It features Bell in a short spoken monolog at the start and then the song eases into a laid back Memphis soul slow game filled with blues inspired guitar riffs, church inspired backing vocals and a rhythm section that lays down a solid and funky foundation for Bell’s passionate, sweet and gritty vocals, and his vocal improvisations such as the one that finds him voicing “yes we can,” Obama’s famous slogan from his 2008 campaign, as the backing vocalists sing the hook.

In the tradition of all great soul songs, “Let’s Make Love Great Again” speaks to the yearning to make love great on a political level, a personal level, and a romantic level. Check it out here.
