(May 8, 2023) Wyn Starks’ biography is a reminder of how much music fans have in common with those whose voices and talents we admire. Starks has experienced setbacks and losses on a professional and personal level, and he’s done his best to grow from those painful situations.

Starks lost his hospitality industry job during the height of the Covid 19 pandemic and decided that professional setback provided him with an opportunity to focus exclusively on his music career, which resulted in an appearance on season 17 of America’s Got Talent. Starks earned multiple standing ovations when he performed his song “Who I Am,” one of the 11 tracks on his 2021 debut album Black Is Golden.

“At The End of the River,” the song featured on this First Listen, also appeared on Black Is Golden. “At The End of the River” was inspired by the death of Starks’ twin brother, and he expresses the range of emotions felt by anyone who has dealt with the loss of a loved one – gratitude for all the wonderful memories, regret for all the things his brother won’t see, grief about the loss, and hope for a reunion in the future.

Backed by the legendary Fisk Jubilee Singers, “At The End of the River” fuses what is good and compelling about soul music, honesty, vulnerability, and a deep and abiding optimism even in the face of unspeakable grief.
