(June 28, 2022) Summer 2022 has arrived, and the time is right for “dancing in the streets.” In preparation of the bronzy sun tans, gorgeous beach surfs and sweat-soaking heatwaves to come, the dynamic duo of Young Gun Silver Fox are takin’ it to the streets with even more of their West Coast AOR-dipped soul.
After wowing our ears with their yacht rock revival debut LP (2015’s West End Coast) and riding the musical waves inside 2018’s AM Waves and 2020’s Canyons, Mamas’ Gun frontman Andy Platts and UK producer/multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee nestle their feet in the sand with “West Side Jet.” Ripe with summer vibes, this four-minute smooth sailin’ banger soaks up plenty of sun and instantly tugs at the ear as it carries on about a troubled street-smart boy “who’s always looking over his shoulder” in his navigation of a cruel cold world. And it’s solidly assembled too, dripping in the summer fever of Boz Scaggs’ “Lowdown” and a musicality that bounces around sunny Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan vibes.
The love for nostalgia hits a crescendo inside the companion concept video which finds retro Pop Art-esque visuals of the pair working through a 2D side-scrolling arcade game totally reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. If you fell in love with their previous work and are in need of some yacht rock summer lovin’, this is the way to go.
