(August 26, 2020) Zbonics band leader Zak Najor said he was thinking about roller skating rinks when he wrote “Outerspace.” Remember those up-tempo cuts that drew the best skaters onto the rink where they swooped between the other skaters, executed elaborate spins and of course, skated backwards?

“Outerspace,” with its smooth bass line straddling that line between disco and funk, and Rebecca Jade’s sweetly seductive vocals inviting the object of her desire on a cosmically romantic ride, definitely catches that vibe. We know from their 2013 album Time to Do Your Thing that Zbonics is a group that is conversant in funk. That project drew much of its energy from Gregory Porter, who showed that he was as adept at singing funk as the jazz, blues and soul that has earned him accolades and Grammys. That trend continues with Jade on “Outerspace.” Check it out here.
