Live Performance: Amber Mark Asks “What If” On BBC Radio 1Xtra

March 29, 2020 — I don’t know about you, but I often wonder in this era of auto-tune and the infinite possibilities of studio gimmickry whether my favorite new artists can really deliver the goods live. More often than not, I’m sadly disappointed the first time I see live footage of them, with the Weeknd springing most readily to mind….

But that’s not the case with Amber Mark, the artist most recently featured in our new 10 Gems series. We feature here Amber and her band playing a stripped-down version of her hit song “What If” on BBC Radio 1Extra. If anything, the interesting textures and valleys of Amber’s voice are all the more apparent live than on record, and the overall vibe is compelling: There’s a certain Sade-goes-a-bit-hip-hop energy to this performance. Enjoy.
