SoulTracks Lost Gem: The Chi-Lites got us dancing on "Stop What You're Doing"

In the 60s, Smokey Robinson virtually reinvented the sweet soul ballad and paved the way for a number of groups that would make the early 70s a ballad lovers dream era. And no act epitomized that genre more than this hard working group from Chicago with an underappreciated musical genius at the helm.

Most music fans remember the group's big 70s hits like "Oh Girl" and "Have You Seen Her," but fewer soulsters remember the four albums that the Chi-Lites issued after their 1980 reunion. These discs showed the group's versatility and lead singer/songwriter Eugene Record's talent writing electronic dance numbers. The Chi-Lites scored a moderate hit with "Stop What You're Doing" in 1984, and the track still sounds electric today.
