Video of the Month: Kea Michaels gives the story on "Not My Friend"

We first heard Kea Michaels a few years ago, and were immediately thrown back to the 1980s, when soul music radio was filled with now legendary singers like Anita Baker, Phyllis Hyman and Patti Austin. It isn't often a new artist reminds us of that glorious period for music, so we cherish it when it happens -- and Kea has made that happen a few times now, as we've tracked her career through a series of songs.

Kea Michaels sings of love lost and found, and always with a frankness that is refreshing. And she has a brand new music video that again is an engaging mix of her sweet voice and strikingly honest lyrics. We first introduced SoulTrackers to the song "Not My Friend" a few months ago, and you loved it. We think you'll love the video even more.

Kea tells us about “Not My Friend”: My goal is to represent real life experiences with each and every song. We want a loving relationship, but sometimes we deal in fairytales. We do a disservice to one another when we forget to mention the bumps and bruises that occur in most relationships. ‘Not My Friend’ is a glimpse into an unhealthy relationship, but not one that deals with the usual headlines of infidelity or physical abuse. It is often tougher to talk about emotional abuse. And this song displays one woman's courageous act to move on and forward after such a relationship, and to realize her self worth.”
