(September 26, 2018) Singer and actor Al Matthews has died at age 75. Movie fans best knew Matthews for his role at Gunnery Sergeant Apone in the various Aliens movies. But music fans knew him for his 1975 hit single “Fool,” which made a minor dent on the US charts but became a smash in Europe.

The U.S. born Matthews served as a Marine in Vietnam, and returned to focus principally on acting. He had roles in such notable films as Superman III, The Fifth Element and Rough Cut. He relocated to the UK and worked in several projects on television and radio there.

“Fool” was a cool slice of 70s soul that still sounds great today. Unfortunately, we didn’t hear much more from Matthews as a singer, but he certainly made a name for himself in multiple realms over the years and created for himself an enviable, lasting career.
