Former Temptations lead singer Bruce Williamson dies at age 49

(September 7, 2020) 2020 can end right now. Really. We have even more sad news from this awful year, as former Temptations lead singer Bruce Williamson has died at Mountain View Hospital in his home town of Las Vegas at a very young age 49, reportedly from COVID-19 complications. 

Earlier today, Williamson’s son, Bruce Jr. posted on Facebook: There's no words in the world that can express how I feel right now I love you Daddy thank you for being awesome thank you for being loving thank you for being Who You Are I pray to God and we will meet again. I love you Daddy.

Williamson was lead singer for the Temptin’ Tempts from 2006 until 2015, and kept a very busy touring schedule around the world. He replaced soul legend G.C. Cameron, and was the principal lead on the group’s albums Back To Front (2007) and Still Here (2010). After nine years, he left the Tempts in 2015 and was replaced by former Tower of Power singer Larry Braggs.

A big, powerful man with an even more powerful voice, Williamson was a crowd favorite during his stint with the group, deftly handling the classic hits of David Ruffin and Dennis Edwards in concert.

After his departure from the Temptations, Williamson continued to perform successfully as a solo act and in Las Vegas with the Lon Bronson band. He also led a local group called the Sons of Soul.

His name is likely unfamiliar to many soul music fans, but he was a big time talent who rose to front the greatest vocal group of all time for nearly a decade. His death at such an early age is a blow to soul music fans everywhere. Rest in peace, Mr. Williamson.
