(April 27, 2023) I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking that the Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires is the name of a new Quentin Tarantino flick that’s a mashup of “Kill Bill” and “From Dusk Til Dawn.” You’d be kind of wrong and kind of right. The name does come from a 1974 martial arts horror movie titled “The Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires” that I somehow missed back in the day, but then, so did a lot of people. The movie flopped at the box office.

Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires is a musical collaboration between producer/multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Foster and DJ Luke Hadron. The union has produced two singles, “Autumn Fall,” which dropped last year and “Close To You,” the focus of this First Listen.

Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires is a musical collaboration between producer/multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Foster and DJ Luke Hadron. The union has produced two singles, “Autumn Fall,” which dropped last year and “Close To You,” the focus of this First Listen.

Learning a bit about their history and you understand why Foster and DJ Luke Hadron chose the name. Their music is deeply influenced by the Bastard Pop/Mashup scene that came out of the London club Bastard in the early 2000s. Foster gravitated to that scene after playing in indie bands in the 1980s and 90s, and eventually co-founded a label to release vinyl records that appealed to fans of that scene.

DJ Luke Hadron had been working in the mashup scene already when he and Foster connected. Like the movie from which this union draws its name, Legends of the Seven Golden Vampires fuses two samples from classic songs from the 1960s and 70s with modern sounds and looped vocals to create something different.

In the case of “Close To You,” the pair mash dance music with 1970s era disco infused funk to create something that is unique yet familiar and funky. Check out the World Premiere of the video for “Close To You” here.
