(November 1, 2022) As a preteen, Zambia-born Warren Mills got an early taste of success on airwaves and the screen during the mid-1980s. Signed to Jive Records—then home to the likes of Billy Ocean and Whodini, he released a self-titled album and charted two hits in the UK with a cover of The Miracles’ “Mickey’s Monkey” and the Full Force-composed “Sunshine.” In America, he appeared in the cult classic Mario Van Peebles musical drama, Rappin’.

Mills has largely retreated from the business since that time, but a request from a cousin to remake a Ryan Leslie favorite for a birthday celebration got his creative juices flowing again. He says, “I did it on an IPad, and we were both so impressed, I decided to dabble a bit more until I went all out and bought studio equipment!” The initial results can be heard in his self-written and -produced new single, “Luckiest Man.” The title track from an album due in late November, the romantic, atmospherically arranged midtempo groover showcases the singer in confident, skillfully smoldering form as he relates the intuitive feelings experienced in a relationship that defies expectations.

Warren explains, “‘Luckiest Man’ is about rediscovering new love. After a very bitter divorce, I met someone special who inspired me to write most of the songs on my new album. I love music more than life, and I feel that all my past experiences have brought me to this point. It’s good to be making music again—but this time doing it my way and being able to spread my wings unconditionally.”
