(February 22, 2019) Man, it is a jungle out there. A true state of nature where life is indeed nasty, brutish and short. How can the heart survive when the predators are everywhere? I’m, of course, talking about relationships where the wolves clothe themselves as nice sensitive guys or empathic ladies with a welcoming shoulder to rest upon in order to camouflage their true intentions.

These are the ‘animals’ that Indianapolis based soul singer Bashiri Asad and fellow Indy based vocalist Muffy Cakes address in the new single “The Animal.” The cut is the new release from Asad’s upcoming album The Way We Are.

The animal is a different kind of duet in that Asad and Muffy Cakes are not singing to each other. Rather, they impart lessons on those wide-eyed naïve lovers to steer them away from the emotional slaughterhouse that awaits.

SoulTrackers are aware of Bashiri Asad. We’ve been hearing from him for years, most recently on his excellent soul album from 2017, A Girl Named Charlie. Muffy Cakes is much lesser known, but worth noting. Part of that is because she put her singing career on hold to pursue her career in banking and to raise her family. But now she’s performing in Indianapolis and in other places, and her strong performance helps to bring out the message found in this piece of music. Check it out.
