(August 17, 2023) It’s that time of year. School is back in session. However, drummer and music educator Drew Schultz is always prepared to teach. Schultz’s classroom is a concert hall or a night club, and the band stand serves as his lectern.

Over the years, Schultz has worked with music legends to explore the history of the music that Detroit and Memphis gave us, as well as providing a musicologist’s step by step examination of the process that resulted in the creation of some of our most loved soul songs.

Schultz will be dropping his latest interactive educational project Back To Class, Vol. 2, on Sept. 9. Like the first volume in this series, which was released 10 years ago, Schultz wrote original songs that will be performed by soul music legends. Once again, proceeds from this album will go to the Detroit Public Schools.

“Give It Up,” with legendary singer and songwriter Spyder Turner as lead vocalist, is the lead single from Back To Class, Vol. 2. An amalgamation of funk and blues, “Give It Up” is a danceable and fun story of a man who at long last has gotten his priorities straight.

Turner sings about realizing that it was time to stop seeking satisfaction in the streets and shift his focus to being a family man. Turner’s vocals on this tune have a quality that is both world weary and joyful. The horn section serves as Turner’s amen corner, blaring its assent to the soul legends realization that everything he needs is at home. Check out Schultz and Turner’s new audio lesson here.
