(March 15, 2018) Kathy Kosins has been a fixture on the Detroit music scene from the time her dad served as the outfitter of the Motown stars. She’s been a much in demand studio artist, and a vocalist for bands such as Was (Not Was). Kosins has cut albums as a solo artist, and proven equally adept and singing R&B, pop and jazz.

One thing that Kosins has not done is release a single credited to her own band, the Detroit Memphis Experience. That changes with the release of “Put the Voodoo on Me,” her jazzy interpretation of a tune made by one of the royal families of the New Orleans music scene, The Neville Brothers.

Kosins and the Detroit Memphis Experience smooth out the percussive and funky Neville Brothers version and also add some jazz improvisation. And then there’s Kosins’ vocals that are power packed, yet sensual and hypnotic when they have to be. Kosins reimagining of “Put the Voodoo on Me” is one that pays homage to the original while also managing to be distinct.
