The song is intensely personal in that it was inspired by Rae’s decision to end a long-term relationship. Rebel Rae said that while her songs have always been topical, this song and her soon to be released EP, Take All My Tears, find the singer/songwriter looking inward to her relationships and life for inspiration and subject matter – something that she has not done previously.

The song is intensely personal in that it was inspired by Rae’s decision to end a long-term relationship. Rebel Rae said that while her songs have always been topical, this song and her soon to be released EP, Take All My Tears, find the singer/songwriter looking inward to her relationships and life for inspiration and subject matter – something that she has not done previously.
The song’s title reflects the fact that Rae has reached the acceptance stage of grieving the end of a relationship. She has accepted the fact that she still has strong feelings for this person and those feelings caused her to remain in the relationship longer than she should have. She’s also accepted the reality she and her former lover aren’t right for each other, despite their best efforts to make things work. Saying he is someone she used to know is a way of putting him in the past.
Judging from what Rebel Rae says about her songwriting process, it’s not surprising that she embraced the difficult challenge of using her personal experiences as the source material for her songs.
“Everything is a song to me. I see a couple arguing… Song! I see a couple making out… Song! I see a homeless man on the street… That feeling creates a song. I hear about our people being oppressed… Another song. My relationships, my family, my experiences all become songs. Long story short, my inspiration just comes from life.”
