(October 1, 2019) For several years we’ve been following the unusual and interesting career of singer-songwriter Rissi Palmer. She is seen by some as an anomaly, an artist whose music is an interesting mixture of soul and country. But, as we’ve written about before, the two genres have much more in common than some folks think. Storytelling and a keen sense of melody spell the best of both genres, and Rissi has plenty of both in her music.

She received much attention for 2007 debut, making her a pioneer as an African-American woman on the country charts. And now Rissi is preparing for a brand new album, Revival, largely produced by fellow SoulTracks fave, Brian Owens. Rissi says, "This album is one of the most personal I've ever written and recorded. Everything I write is personal, but I feel like I'm in a place of being really honest and transparent with people because that's what I like in an artist. That's what I look for; those are the people I'm interested in, and I want to do that same thing for others."

And she’s just given us a sneak peek of the disc with the new single, “Soul Message,” a tasty slow jam that straddles the three way border between country, pop and soul. She sounds great as always, and the production is appropriately restrained, letting her expressive vocals take the lead up front.

We’re enjoying “Soul Message,” and Rissi’s expansive view of music is right on time. Check it out below and tell us what you think.
