But even her strong output over the years didn’t prepare us for last year’s breakout release Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete, Sy’s most personal album and one of our undoubted faves of 2018.

She’s the hardest working woman in show business and has delivered a string of fun, always thoughtful albums over more than 15 years. But even her strong output over the years didn’t prepare us for last year’s breakout release Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete, Sy’s most personal album and one of our undoubted faves of 2018.
The response for Concrete was so great that Sy released Sometimes A Rose Will Get A Remix, a disc of remixes that take the album in intriguing directions. Maybe our favorite song from the album is Sy’s duet with talented and ubiquitous singer, songwriter and producer B.Slade on a remix of “Perspective.” And as good as the song is, it is made all the better by the cool, sexy new video featuring the two stars.
Sy tells us, “B. Slade has really been instrumental in this whole process. He jumped off the remix album when he called me out of the blue and asked me if he could do a remix to ‘Perspective.’ Then when I mentioned that I wanted to shoot a video, he helped me find just the right production team to get it done (we shot with Alex DiMarco of Hustlecake Productions).
“With this video, I wanted to show a side of myself that I hadn’t done in any of my videos yet. I wanted to dance a little so we shot at a capoeira studio. I wanted to not be so glammed up, so I opted out of having a thousand-dollar beauty squad. I wanted to be sweaty and gritty because that’s the way this remix feels to me, so I’m in sneakers and a baggy jumpsuit for half of the clip. The track also has a throwback feel, so I wanted the video to allude to those storytelling videos from the 90s. There’s a budding love story there, though it’s not so in-your-face, and that’s just how I like it. I wanted to give the viewers pieces... and leave room for them to imagine the rest. B.Slade has such amazing and intense energy too. He is a consummate performer, I mean CONSUMMATE! So I had a wonderful time playing off of him! I think it’s easy to see the natural chemistry we had while shooting this...it’s all over the screen.”
