For an artist who has risen to the top of the indie soul world on the strength of his relentless touring and a stage magnetism reminiscent of Marvin Gaye, it was only natural that Eric Roberson would eventually release a "live" CD. But the idea went from the obvious to the inspired by the packaging of the CD with a DVD that includes both live performances and offstage material explaining his history and the history of each of the songs. And while the CD is a fine addition to Roberson's discography, it is the accompanying DVD that really makes the package, showing the engaging, playful immediacy of Roberson's shows on a variety of concert stages in DC. Unusual photography, including split screens and multiple angles, add further drama to the video and also add a professional quality not often found in independent projects.
The result of the package in both video and audio format is that longtime favorite tracks such as "Couldn't Hear Me" are given new context in the live format and more recent songs like "Softest Lips" (from The Appetizer) feel like instant classics. In the end, Erro Live Vol: DC is an effective, enjoyable bridge for old and new fans, providing Roberson's core following the chance to relive his immensely popular shows and allowing new listeners to discover what the fuss is all about. Highly recommended.
