In the early days of SoulTracks, we found an independent Detroit-based singer who immediately became a favorite. Darnell Kendricks was known around the city for his smooth jams and his legendary shows that combined the best of music and food.
It has been more than a dozen years since we last heard new music from the "Strawberry Lemonade" singer, but all that has changed with the release of "What A Wonderful Night," which ran its world premiere on SoulTracks earlier in the year. The smooth jam, produced by Sound Sanctuary, is aimed directly at Kendricks' sizeable ballroom and stepper audiences, as it combines a line dance-worthy beat with urbane lyrics that gently invite listeners to move onto the floor.
Darnell Kendricks is one cool character, and he maintains that smoothness on the Dominick Shelton composition, which is a great re-entry for the talented singer.
