May 2, 2020 — Welcome back to 10 Gems, our new series featuring 10-song, single-artist playlists that we think may especially appeal to SoulTrackers. The focus here is not on track position or “hits,” although some are included; rather, it’s all about quality, atmospherics, groove and feel.

Our featured artist is the UK singer/songwriter and guitarist Mahalia, who released her striking debut full-length album, Love and Compromise, just last year. She is a BRIT award “Best New Artist” and NAACP “Outstanding New Artist” nominee for good reason: Her music is organic and authentic; her lyrics are honest and personal; and her voice is warm, textured, expressive and compelling. While many of her tracks are multi-layered and well produced, she doesn’t really need a “wall of sound” supporting her. Mahalia’s acoustic versions of her songs, including the hits, are arguably even better than the radio-friendly originals. She is an artist worth your spending quality, uninterrupted time with; you won’t regret it. Enjoy.
