First Listen: Anthony David & Reel People “Keep It Up”

December 16, 2018 — This track is fire, I tell you.

Let’s start with the rhythm section of the UK’s Reel People, which locks into a hypnotic, hip-shakin’ groove from the opening measure that you’ll wish would never end.  Then SoulTracks’ favorite Anthony David comes in singing like a lion who hasn’t eaten for days, amid atmospheric moans and sighs from an unidentified lioness who clearly has studied Donna Summer’s playbook from “Love To Love You Baby.”  And just when you think the track can’t possibly get any hotter, a piano solo drops in that’s so in the pocket it’ll make you shout “oh yeah.”

“Keep It Up” is the closing track from Reel People’s new album Retroflection, a collection of 12 lovingly-rendered covers of soul and funk classics.  They saved the best for last!  Enjoy.
