(May 26, 2022) Formed in 2009, the Chicago-based eight-piece R&B band Attack the Sound has been turning up the volume on their interesting blend of funk, pop, blues and hip-hop, while performing live on WGN and Windy City Live. And now they are making great strides nationally with their latest single, the whimsy heartbreak-to-heartsaver uptempo jam “Pick Up Your Phone.”

With snazzy live horns and Cee Lo Green retro soul, the song echoes the energy of 21st century doo-wop while depositing horn arrangements akin to their Chicago soul predecessors (Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire). Lead vocalist and band founder Davo Sounds puts away the shame of cosmic begging and pleads passionately for his lover’s return with every spin of the chorus (“And I don’t care what you’ve done/I don’t mind what they’ll say because I need your embrace/Please don’t make me wait”).

Towards the end, the song thrusts into a fiery climax handled by Davo, sending off shockwaves of an Otis Redding meltdown.

But don’t let all the overwhelming adjectives fool you; the song — thanks to its bubbly tempo and groovy rhythm — is pretty playful, fun and upbeat. In a recent Attack the Sound press statement, the group writes: “While lyrically it may feel like a break-up song, the track’s message is really about the push and pull we experience in relationships. We’re all human and what draws us to one another is often unexplainable; however, we know when it’s time to put the past aside and instead, reach out for that loving embrace.”
