(October 24, 2023) Brian McKnight’s self-titled debut album included a song titled “My Prayer,” in which he expressed the hopes of a new father as he considered the birth of his newborn son. That song was a track on an album that included hits “The Way Love Goes” and “One Last Cry.” McKnight has spent the last 30 years making the kind of music that facilitates getting couples in a family way.

That includes McKnight himself who welcomed a new son earlier this year. Men are often inspired by the birth of a child, and McKnight is in the inspiration business. McKnight’s new addition inspired him to create a project that can assist parents in getting those little bundles of joy to go to sleep. That album, titled McKnightime Lullabies, features McKnight’s interpretation of classic lullabies like “You Are My Sunshine,” as well as originals such as “Baby Instructions,” the tune showcased in this First Listen.

In this song, McKnight sings from the perspective of an infant who gives advice to new parents on how to care for a newborn baby. The song gives those parents insight into what a newborn might want or need when he or she wakes up or when the child cries. McKnight’s smooth vocals that have given voice to so many romantic ballads sweetly advise parents how to love on their new child while also providing a peaceful soundtrack to get the little one (and the parents) to drift back to sleep.
