(July 7, 2021) Candace Woodson’s story of recovery and renewal is familiar to members of the SoulTracks family. She performed less than a month after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. That spirit of strength, independence and optimism in the face of whatever she confronts comes through in her music, whether she is letting an insensitive man know that she has reached her limits of patience and forgiveness on “The Answer is No,” or singing about anxiously awaiting the end of a long work day so that she can turn her total focus to that special someone.

Woodson brings that same energy to her latest, which is a very good steppers remix of the song “Midas Touch.” Both versions contain plenty of virtues. The original is a bass driven, mid-tempo love song that is very funky. Lush is an apt description of the stepper’s version with its backing vocals and horn flourishes that give the tune the feel and sound of Philly Soul.

Woodson’s voice, of course, is the common denominator in both versions. The funky original and the Philly soul inspired steppers remix need a vocalist with range and energy and Woodson has enough of both qualities to spare. Check out “Midas Touch (US Stepper’s Mix) here.
