(December 23, 2022) One of the left field delights of 2021 was the hit single “Yamz” by Devin Morrison and Masego. The song recalled the Yacht Soul sounds of the 80s with modern R&B influences -- and ostensibly lyrically paying tribute to a sweet tuber vegetable while actually referencing the struggle for a better, more successful life.
Now a year later, that song gets a second life, courtesy of classic soul men Charlie Wilson and Ron Isley along with rapper Fetty Wap in a version called "Sweet Yamz." It is a remix of a song that Wilson and Fetty put on TikTok a few weeks ago, now adding Isley to the mix. While keeping the musical vibe and refrain of the original Morrison song, the new version takes the cut to a different, less subtle, place lyrically, using yams and related food items as rather tired sexual metaphors.
