(July 2, 2023) The name I.Khan can be viewed as more than name of the singer/songwriter and actress, the daughter of Chaka Khan, and the voice on the hypnotic new song “Magic.” The name is also a play on words, a nod to her iconic mom and a hint into what she aspires to become.
I.Khan is a veteran in this industry for whom it would not be an empty boast for her to say she’s done it all – singing group member, songwriter, backing vocalist and solo artist. On “Magic,” I.Khan strikes the balance between an arrangement that sports contemporary R&B elements with lyrics and vocals that sport a classic love song vibe.
Thematically, “Magic” is a throwback. The song possesses an innocence and a belief that true love possesses powers that are supernatural, healing and restorative. I.Khan uses the song’s title to express the mystical hold that her man has on her. Still, “Magic” is a song about the centrality of seeing and believing. There is no blind faith here. She is responding to the things that he does, the words that he says because there something magical in realized potential, performance and a love that is deep and true.
