(February 6, 2024) Although funk music saw its commercial peak in the 1970’s and 80’s, a number of artists are keeping the funk alive today in a fresh way.  Two prime examples are Jonny Tobin and Maya Killtron, who are both from Canada.

Jonny is a Grammy-nominated keyboardist and beatmaker whose music is described as a mixture of synth funk grooves and jazzy undertones, while Maya is known for her 80s-inspired funk style, which has earned her the nickname, Canada's Queen of Boogie.

So, if you’re looking for a song that brings the funk in 2024, look no further than Jonny and Maya’s new collaboration, “On the Line.  This jam has an infectious beat that will get you to boogie. (Personally, each time I listen to the song, my head starts moving and then I go into a full bounce when the chorus hits.)

Not only is this song a bop (as today’s youth might say), but it’s relatable too.  Maya soulfully sings the story of working-class individuals who face daily pressure to achieve but are still in touch with their own dreams. She also sings this advice about what to do when facing a big decision in life: “If in your heart it’s a ‘No’, you gotta let go and move it on to the next.”  Accentuating Maya’s vocals are the soulful sounds of Jonny’s keyboard, which he skillfully plays to put the ‘fun’ in funk.

“On the Line” is available on all digital platforms and, in true old-school fashion, on a limited amount of 7” vinyl records too. The song is said to appeal to lovers of modern funk and beyond, and we wholeheartedly agree.  Check it out below.
