(April 5, 2024) For those who strive to make music their professional destination, the sacrifices can be excruciating, making mentorship by experienced artists among the most treasured moments in their development. For pianist Kevin Flournoy, there were the rewards in meeting seasoned musicians like Miles Davis that quenched his thirst to stay his artistic course.

Granted, the name Kevin Flournoy may not immediately jump into many music fans’ minds, yet his extensive body of work in R&B, jazz and pop over three decades of collaborations - more recently, with Phil Perry and Ronnie Laws – is impressive. In the past two years, Flournoy has recorded under his K-Flow moniker, including a cover of The S.O.S. Band’s “Tell Me If You Still Care” with saxophonist Richard Elliot. And now, SoulTracks introduces the keyboardist/producer on his latest single from a prolonged, anticipated debut CD, Vers•a•tility.

On his First Listen bow, Flournoy and musical theatre/urban song stylist Amanda Cole convey a serene, yet poignant scene on the path to an eternal home, entitled “To the Water,” written by Matt Simons. Backed by a rhythm section, full orchestra, and a few subtle synth strings, Flournoy sets a peaceful mood capturing an inevitable part of life through one’s last days on earth. Though Cole holds back from belting out into the stratosphere, her soulful, even keel voice fully nails the song’s purpose.  And Flournoy’s eighties/nineties’ adult contemporary ballad arrangement matches Cole’s performance.

“To the Water” scores an impressive first appearance for Flournoy on the SoulTracks platform.  Check it out!
