(January 8, 2019) La’Donna Lynn has the kind of voice that will attract interest from anyone looking to bring power to a tune. That will be the case whether she is the lead singer or standing 20 feet from stardom. It will also be the case regardless of whether she is singing the gospel that she grew up singing in Pentecostal churches in Brooklyn or when she sings background for jazz and R&B singers in the New York area.
However, in recent years, Lynn decided to use her great vocal talent to advance the cause of the gospel. Making that choice does not come without costs. It means that Lynn may be foregoing paydays from artists who would love to have a background singer with her talent on their albums. However, she believes that God is able to provide for her if she will live for him. She expresses that sentiment on her new song that is simply titled “He’s Able.” This gospel ballad finds Lynn singing her belief in a God that is able to meet her need and allow her to overcome any challenge. “He’s Able” fuses an R&B arrangement, a touch of jazz improvisation, some gospel infused keyboards with vocal work from an artist whose life lines up with the words she sings.
