First Listen: Lasperanza shines on reimagined Michael Jackson classic

(June 21, 2019) SoulTrackers who’ve been reading our pages this year know that we’ve become big fans of the UK-based collective Lasperanza. With musician and producer Rico Garofalo at the helm, Lasperanza won us over with the incredible new album, Seeds (Check out our review).

Garofalo had worked with many musical greats over the years, and he had a clear vision of what he wanted to create for his own project. Seeds takes a number of classic songs and gives them a whole new feel, with Lasperanza taking full ownership.

Perhaps the song from the project that is getting the most attention is a daring remake of Michael Jackson’s classic jam “Working Day and Night. Rico Garofalo tells us "How do you take one of MJ's most special tunes, with such energy and famous horn lines...yet do something different to it whilst retaining both of those aspects? For me, the bass / guitar were the key, and using the horns percussively. Add in Kayleigh O’Neill’s seductive vocal, and (pardon the pun) mix together. I definitely had Prince in mind when doing it.

The result is simply terrific. It is also our latest SoulTracks First Listen. Check out “Working Day and Night” below and tell us what you think.
