(November 22, 2020) I remember when we came to the end of 2019. We spent the Christmas season hoping that the next year would be better. Well, we know how that wish went. Now, we approach another holiday season and the that means that musicians and singers are releasing their Christmas singles and albums as they try to capture the spirit of the season and get their listeners in the spirit. They’re going to have their work cut out from them.

I mean, songs about going over through the woods to grandmother’s house take on a different meaning when Dr. Fauci is recommending against going to see grandma this Holiday season – or at least quarantining for 14 days and presenting a negative COVID test before you go. Christmas 2020 is going to be different, so perhaps it should not be surprising that artists such as vocalist Michael Dunston realize that their Holiday songs should be a bit different as well.

Dunston’s “I Can’t Believe It’s Christmas” has the theme of a person who comes to the year’s last holiday after absorbing all of the blows that 2020 had to offer – the economic disruption, the social upheaval, the political fights – and realizing that it might not be that easy to get into the Christmas spirit this year. He’s seen a backyard filled with green grass and flowers now covered with snow and a social media timeline filled with names like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor and 250,000 dead from a virus. Now, as he trims the tree and wraps the gifts, he knows that it’s up to him – and us – to find meaning in this Christmas. This is a great song. Check it out here.
