(May 15, 2023) One listen to the rapturous talent of Miranda Joan and you can understand why she’s going places. Consequence of Sound named “Overstimulated,” as a “honorable mention” in a Song of the Week feature last year and her smoky Tiny Desk concert contribution to NPR turned a number of heads. She’s already rubbed elbows on the same stage with the likes of Shawn Mendes, Andy Grammer and Lorde. But the Canadian-born singer-songwriter, now a Brooklyn transplant, is making newer and bigger strides with a wave of new music in anticipation of her forthcoming album.

“I’m Good,” Joan’s latest, is dominated by dreamy, sultry, SZA-esque vibes wrapped in slow jam etherealness. Its lyrics are universally reassuring and motivating. After hitting a few snags in life, she looks around at her blessings and turns to the clouds for inspiration: “If only I could figure out/How to live above the clouds/Holy things evading me/Like truth and trust and honesty/Taking time so I can see the good things.”

“I wrote this song on the heels of a year that kicked my ass,” Joan explains. “It was a time when my mind, body and spirit had suffered, long and slow and I was looking for a place of peace where I could rest. Standing in the midst of the wreckage of that year, all I could see at the time was the damage, and so I wrote this song to remind myself of what still was; of the love that remained.”

Also, there’s just not enough hyper adjectives to describe the stylings of emerging Canadian artist Miranda Joan. Her voice is almost enigmatic; blurring the lines of blues, jazz and pop; Billie Holiday, Janet Jackson and Amy Winehouse. But she finds a sweet home in the modern contemporary soul of “I’m Good.” With the effortless blend of soulful grit and the raspy phrasing of Erykah Badu and Elle King, this emerging artist is posed to gain critical acclaim and is definitely one to watch in 2023.
