(May 25, 2023) Nicolay is best known to SoulTrackers for his work with the collective known as The Foreign Exchange, a group he formed with Phonte from the rap group Little Brother. Nicolay and Phonte are The Foreign Exchange’s two constants, but group has an ever-evolving sound that encompasses everything from jazz and hip hop to funk and EDM. That has prompted the group to tap a revolving roster of vocalist that includes Eric Roberson, Darien Brockington, Yahzarah, just to name a few.

So, when Nicolay branches out to make an original song, he can rely both on his contacts and technical skills as a producer to make it very easy to work with others. That comes through on his latest single, “No More Waiting,” a song that draws on Nicolay’s work in the electronic music scene as well as his collaborations with vocalists who sing with passion and soul.

“No More Waiting” is a truth in advertising title that finds vocalist Rich “Creative Theory” Singleton expressing the sentiments of anyone who has put so much into a relationship to increasingly diminishing returns. At some point, the giver reaches a breaking point and tells the taker that they are tired of waiting for things to change.

Pairing a vocalist possessing a soulful vibe and church inspired vocal chops with electronic music seems like an odd match, but it often works because when done by an experienced producer such as Nicolay, the synths complement and do not overpower.
