Record label economics and politics prevented Gourdin from reaching the chart-topping success he achieved with “The River,” but the quality of work on his albums kept him in good stead with audiences who appreciate smooth R&B instrumentation and lyrics brimming with romance delivered by a vocalist who possesses a strong vocal instrument.

Gourdin returns with his new single “Getcha.” The tune finds him returning to the lyrical and vocal qualities that his fans enjoy, even as he adopts an arrangement that uses contemporary R&B percussion techniques.

Thematically, “Getcha” is classic Gourdin. He uses a conversational tone to express how he feels about lady that he is trying to woo. In doing so, “Getcha” leans into the kind of romantic sales pitch that emphasizes telling the lady how much he values her. Back in the day, this was the kind of ‘rap’ that a man had to master if he wanted a woman to respond positively to his appeal. On “Getcha” Gourdin shows that the old school is still the best school.
