(March 22, 2024) When breaking down the genres of Smooth Jazz and Contemporary Jazz, there are some aesthetic differences. Yet without question, Grammy and Soul Train Award winner Norman Brown still kicks it on top of the Billboard Smooth Jazz and Contemporary Jazz Charts with every CD he has waxed since 1992.

While the modern jazz icon Wes (Montgomery) is one of his prime heroes, Brown’s affection for his brother Roy Brown’s guitar skills was the major door opener to his mission statement of bringing effortless job to listening ears.  This remarkable journey includes collaborations with Gerald Albright and the power trio – BWB (Brown, Rick Braun, and Kirk Whalum).  And SoulTracks has recognized Brown’s work, including a former World Premiere of the stepper’s groove driven, “I Won’t Hurt You,” co-written and produced by Wirlie Morris.

For his upcoming 15th CD, It Hits Different (Shanachie Entertainment), Brown’s musicality stretches even further, flexing several genres including pop and blues.  On our latest First Listen spotlight, R&B and funk take centerstage as Brown recruits Morris again, this time for the lead microphone on the album’s title track.

The storyline, co-written by Morris and Brown, illustrates the right timing in assuredly finding the right soulmate.  And the healthy urban mix never forsakes Brown’s jazz adlibs and intricate guitar strums, while Morris’ silky voice and pleasing backing harmonies accentuate a welcome world of a sincerely feel-good, forever romance.   In other words, “It Hits Different” reflects the right elements that have elevated Brown’s delight in connecting with jazz followers worldwide and beyond for over 3 decades.
