Lost Gem: A long vaulted Earth Wind & Fire song that deserved more

Back in 1987, while at the tail end of their Imperial Period, Earth Wind & Fire released Touch The World, a top five album. The disc featured an all-star cast of collaborators and ten solid songs, including the major hit “System of Survival.” It also marked a change in the group’s style, to a more electronics-based sound that matched what was going on in the pop and R&B worlds.

One song that didn’t make the cut for that disc was “Nothing Is Too Good For You,” an excellent midtempo number produced by Preston Glass and group leader Maurice White.

Back in 1987, while at the tail end of their Imperial Period, Earth Wind & Fire released Touch The World, a top five album. One song that didn’t make the cut for that disc was “Nothing Is Too Good For You,” an excellent midtempo number produced by Preston Glass and group leader Maurice White.

Preston tells us, “I had produced two songs on EWF (‘Wring On The Wall’ and ‘Sensitive’ – written by Maurice and Philip) and the record company loved the songs so much, they asked if I would do two more with the group. Maurice, Philip and I found the song ‘System of Survival’ written by Skylark, and CBS found the song ‘Nothing Is Too Good For You.’ The thing that stands out most in my mind is that on the recording of it, we had Maurice play live drums.”

“Nothing” not only was of a quality that would have fit the album, it could have even been a single. But instead it ended up on the cutting room floor, largely unheard by the EWF faithful. But it deserves to be heard. “Nothing Is Too Good For You” is still sitting in that darned vault, but it is our latest SoulTracks Lost Gem. Check it out below.
