Billy Paul to be featured this Sunday on "Unsung"

    (SILVER SPRING, MD) - March 25, 2020 - TV One's award-winning documentary series UNSUNG gives viewers a soul music break from social-distancing with the story of Grammy Award-winning crooner, Billy Paul, this Sunday, March 29 at 10 p.m. ET/9C.
     
    Born in North Philadelphia in the 1930s, Billy Paul grew up in a neighborhood that served as a hotbed for flourishing jazz artists. After a chance meeting with Kenny Gamble in the late 1960s, his mix of jazz and R&B helped define the emerging Philadelphia sound. Paul also served as a figure in the ‘60s Civil Rights movement. When “Me and Mrs. Jones” catapulted the crooner to international fame in 1972, the price tag of success came with a heavy cost.

After a chance meeting with Kenny Gamble in the late 1960s, his mix of jazz and R&B helped define the emerging Philadelphia sound. Paul also served as a figure in the ‘60s Civil Rights movement. When “Me and Mrs. Jones” catapulted the crooner to international fame in 1972, the price tag of success came with a heavy cost. Paul struggled with substance abuse and had difficulty finding mainstream success throughout the rest of his career, despite releasing a string of solid chart singles throughout the 70's. Paul passed away in 2016 and in this episode, his wife of 50 years, Gamble & Huff and others come together to pay tribute to one of the great ‘unsung’ singers of his time.
     
    UNSUNG continues its storytelling of influential artists continue with upcoming episodes featuring vocal powerhouse Betty Wright, best known for the 70s hit single "Clean Up Woman;" multi-Grammy Award-winning musician Al Jarreau; and Atlanta hip hop quartet Goodie Mob.
     
    UNSUNG, winner of the 51st Annual NAACP Image Award for Outstanding News/Information- (Series or Special), celebrates the lives of trailblazing musicians whose full stories and journeys have yet to be explored. Through first-hand accounts, interviews with family and friends, and archival footage, each episode weaves a tale of the highs and lows of a life in the limelight.
