dweleDWELE Sunday October 14, 2007 The Attucks Theatre 1010 Church Street, Norfolk, Virginia 23510 DETROIT SOUL AT THE ATTUCKS: Virgin Records Recording artist and Detroit native Dwele headlines the fourth installment of Mojo Live and On The Verge's SOUL IS...concert series at the world famous Attucks Theatre in Norfolk, VA on Sunday October 14.

Dwele born Andwele (translated from Swahili, it means "God has brought me") Gardner, is a legacy of the hip hop generation, one who pays homage to and can recite the musical traditions of years past.  Born in Detroit and a self-professed devotee of jazz and R&B, he's also been known to keep his ears pressed against speakers blaring the sounds of Miles, Marvin, Donny and Stevie.

Dwele, first known to many outside of Detroit for singing the hook on the hit single "Tainted" by Detroit's hip-hop trio Slum Village, has become the Prince of Soul in just a few short years.  After several collaborations (Bahamadia, Roy Ayers, Roy Hargrove), remix projects (Lucy Pearl, London's New Sector Movement), and an overwhelming amount of love from a loyal underground following, Dwele has cultivated his own spirited road with two critically acclaimed albums "Subject" and "Some Kinda" behind him.  From stirring melodies composed on piano keys, he writes poignant music, performs with natural grace, and captivates with his clear, silky tone. He is a songwriter, producer, and vocalist carrying on a Motown-inspired tradition instilled in another era.

Joining Dwele at the Attucks Theatre as his special guest for this incredible night of live soul music is Washington, D.C. newcomer April Sampe'.  Her sultry voice has the power to hypnotize audiences of all ages and ethnic backgrounds.  Her neo-soul sound is pure unadulterated genius.  Her vocal range affords her the flexibility to seamlessly transition from Neo-soul to pop, r&b, gospel, jazz and blues.

The "Soul Is..." concert series dedicates itself to building a live performance platform for independent soul music and artists from across the country.  The series seeks to introduce a vast array of indie soul artists to the Southeastern Virginia region.
