Flashback Soul: Keyshia Cole Has “Got To Get (Her) Heart Back”

In 2007, the singer/songwriter Keyshia Cole released her second album, Just Like You, which was a considerable critical and commercial success. It debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 and reached platinum sales, spawning two #1 R&B singles, “Let It Go” and “Heaven Sent.”

But forget the hits, my friends, the track on the album is “Got To Get My Heart Back,” which highlights everything delightful about Cole:  Her voice, so muscular and rich yet wounded, sounding like it’s been ever so lightly sanded to add texture, her hip-hop inspired phrasing, and the way she inhabits a song emotionally. Simply put, the lady has soul.  We feature Cole here singing the track live on MTV. Enjoy.
