It’s little remembered  that Daryl Hall, one half of the Philly soul duo Hall & Oates, released a solo album Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine in 1986 amid his band’s extended run of high-charting singles and records.  The album reached #29 on the Billboard chart, a respectable performance, no doubt, although not at the level of Hall & Oates’ previous three records, all of which cracked the top 5.  But one track from Hall’s solo effort, “Somebody Like You,” is an especially perfect vehicle for the display of his soulful vocals in full bloom.

In recent years, Hall has re-emerged on the scene with a television program, Live from Daryl’s House, where he invites new and established artists over to play covers of their songs and his own; and in one episode, Hall unleashes a version of this song that eclipses even the original.  Now in his late  60’s, Hall’s voice retains all of its range and nuance, and accompanied by the great Joe Walsh on guitar, he shows the kids how it’s done!
